Our junior chefs courses are suitable for children aged 5 to 16, and where children of age twelve years and under are accompanied by an adult.

Our inspirational, educational and fun food-based cooking courses for schools give students the opportunity and tools to discover, develop and make full use of their potential.

Our cooking courses motivate and enhance learners’ confidence, self-esteem and resilience. Consequently, learners develop core skills in teamwork, communication and problem solving.

We offer three hands-on practical programmes for learners:

Food4Thought – smoother transition from KS2 to KS3
FoodMiles Better – short course for learners aged 13-19
The Culinary Challenge – for young people with SEND or those facing barriers to learning

Food4Thought is a food preparation and cooking activity-based programme that develops soft skills and builds self-esteem to help learners make a successful transition from primary key stage 2 to secondary school key stage 3. It consists of activities designed to develop learners’ skills in a range of key characteristics that will aid their progression.

Food4Thought will help learners to manage their own learning, recognise their strengths and the characteristics they need to develop. It is supported by a range of high-quality teaching and learning resources.

Who is Food4Thought programme for?

The flexible Food4Thought programme is for learners aged 10–12 and can be delivered to primary and secondary school learners.

Food4Thought will have an impact on the readiness of learners to thrive at secondary school – in particular disadvantaged learners

What does Food4Thought involve?

Food4Thought is made up of 6 modules. Each module contains a range of characteristics that will help develop learners’ skills:

  • Aspiration: Self-worth, self-efficacy, self-control, resilience, determination
  • Awareness: Strengths, possibilities, challenges, information, support
  • Attainment: Planning, communication, self-improvement, application, collaboration

Learners complete a range of food preparation and cooking challenges to develop these characteristics to aid their confidence and progression.

 

The FoodMiles Better short course offers exciting and rewarding activities to develop skills and knowledge through food preparation and cooking. This course helps young people develop practical cooking skills, as well as personal, social and work-related skills.

The FoodMiles Better course will enable learners to:

  • learn about healthy eating and how it’s linked to wellbeing
  • learn and demonstrate the skills and techniques needed to cook
  • gain an understanding of the importance of sustainability in food production
  • how to cook on a budget
  • learn about aspects of the food industry and how it operates

Who is the The FoodMiles Better course for?

The FoodMiles Better Course can be undertaken by young people of all abilities, aged between 13 and 19 (as well as adults and younger learners, where suited).

It is ideal for students who are interested in cooking and enjoy learning in the classroom or in a kitchen setting. Because there are so many aspects to the course – such as cooking, budgeting skills, entertaining and working in the food industry – it will appeal to a wide range of young people.

What does the FoodMiles Better course involve?

The FoodMiles is Better short course contains eight modules, each covering a different topic:

  • Where our food comes from
  • The food industry
  • Healthy eating
  • Basic food safety
  • Food preparation and presentation
  • Cooking on a budget
  • Entertaining
  • Practical cooking skills

The FoodMiles Better short course accredits between 10-60 hours of activities. Do we need to talk about what materials will be used here?

The Culinary Challenge is a series of practical cooking challenges for learners by providing a creative curriculum for young people with SEND or those facing barriers to learning.

Who is the Culinary Challenge for?

The Culinary Challenge is for learners that require a personalised approach to learning, including those with an education, health and care plan (EHCP) or accessing SEN support.

The Culinary Challenge is suited to:

  • special schools’ learners
  • mainstream schools (SEN units, specialist resourced provision)
  • alternative provision learners
  • academies
  • specialist colleges
  • FE colleges

What does the Culinary Challenge involve?

The Culinary Challenge recognises learners’ progress in curriculum areas that are important for success in adult life – they are about being able to do practical things.

Learners work through their Culinary Challenge cooking class modules and collect evidence of their achievements as they go.

The Culinary Challenge course contains eight modules, each covering a different topic:

  • Food origins
  • The food industry
  • Eating healthily
  • Basic food safety
  • Knife skills
  • Practical cooking skills
  • Choosing ingredients and cooking on a budget
  • Food presentation and entertaining

The Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) is a Department for Education body that funds education and training for children, young people and adults in England. It replaced the responsibilities of the former Education Funding Agency and Skills Funding Agency.

Pupil Premium is additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and close the gap between them and their peers.

Pupil Premium Funding for Schools
In the 2023-2024 financial year, schools will receive the following additional funding for each child eligible for the Pupil Premium:

  • £1,455 for primary-aged pupils
  • £1,035 for secondary-aged pupils

Eligiblity criteria include having received free school meals at any point in the last six years.

Ofsted is looking for accelerated progress from those pupils.
